The mentoring program was geared towards introducing the Do Right Initiative Cardinal Principles / Values to Senior Secondary School Students in 5 schools across various local governments of Lagos state. The schools visited includes Gbara Community Senior Secondary School, Lekki; Government Senior College, Ikoyi; Amuwo Odofin Senior High School, Mile 2; Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior Grammar School and Ijaiye Ojokoro Senior College in Alagbado area of Lagos state.
A total of 155 students and 10 teachers were engaged by 10 volunteers and 7 mentors. The session was designed to last for 90mins but started at different times in each school ranging from 11:55am to 12:30pm. Also some sessions lasted for more than 90mins.
Feedback was generally positive as the students were able to grasp the concepts behind the initiative and understand each of the cardinal principles or values. In fact, most of them were able to identify and narrate personal experiences relating to more than 2 of the values. For example, a student from Amuwo Odofin Senior High School, Mile 2, shared his experience of Justice in the community that he lives in. He shared how a young man raped a girl and his father wanted to use his money and influence to sweep the case under the carpet and or frame someone else for the despicable act. However, the elders in the community courageously took up the case and ensured that the culprit was brought to book.
In all, the session was very revealing for both students, volunteers and mentors because they had many opportunities to learn from the experiences of one another during the engagement. Furthermore, the students were encouraged to live out the cardinal principles or values and document their experiences in the Reflection space in the Do Right Branded Journal.
